The ideal time for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is from July to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant, meadows are in full bloom, and the alpine lakes showcase their clearest turquoise hues. Early July offers snow patches along the route, while August and September bring lush greenery and stable trekking conditions.
The trek is graded as moderate difficulty, making it suitable for both beginners with some fitness and experienced trekkers. Each day involves 5–8 hours of trekking over varied terrain, including steep ascents, rocky paths, and high-altitude passes. With proper preparation, stamina building, and guidance from trek leaders, most people with basic fitness can successfully complete it.
Accommodation is arranged in tented camps on a triple-sharing basis. All meals are vegetarian and freshly prepared by the trek team. You’ll be served breakfast, lunch, evening snacks with tea/coffee, and dinner daily. Meals are planned to provide energy for long trekking hours, and drinking water is sourced from natural streams (safe after purification).
The trek starts and ends in Srinagar.
- By Air: Srinagar Airport is well connected with daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and other major cities.
- By Train: The nearest major railway station is Jammu Tawi, about 270 km from Srinagar. From Jammu, you can hire a taxi or take a bus.
- By Road: Srinagar is connected by National Highway 1A. J&K State Road Transport buses and private taxis operate regularly from Jammu.
